A NIGHT ON THE MEDITERRANEAN—The 2nd Avenue Café was
charmingly
decorated for the Taste of Greece event held Monday. The
lighting
and great choice of colors definitely set the tone for the
evening’s events.

The Winchester Downtown
Program Corporation held a Taste of Greece event Monday
evening, March 16 at the 2nd Avenue Café.
The event, being sold out,
obviously had a huge turnout, and for $25 each participant
tasted three different Greek wines and indulged in three
courses of delicious Greek cuisine.
According to the group’s
executive director, Bill Cowan, this event is only one in a
series of anticipated events.
Thanks to collaborative efforts of the group and several
restaurants around downtown, a Taste of Italy at Arrezo’s
Italian Restaurant, a Taste of South America at San Miguel
Coffee Company and a Taste of Country at Mom’s Country Café,
are also expected to take place soon on the square.
“The overall objective of
these events is to introduce people to the downtown area and
to showcase our restaurants and shops,” said Cowan. “We’re
also considering a chili cook off on the square in the fall,
and events committee of the WDPC is [currently] planning
future events.”
John Gegumis, chef and
proprietor of 2nd Avenue Café, was the gracious host of
Taste of Greece, and he gave detailed descriptions of the
meal, mentioning the Greek tradition and elements of each
course.
The restaurant, though having
its usual rustic decor, seemed to have a more Mediterranean
feel with beautiful light fixtures and plants accenting the
room. The white tablecloths also added to its elegant
simplicity.
Gugumis explained simplicity and relaxation are key aspects
to the Greek way of life, which makes Greece and the South
more similar to each other than one would think.
The Taste of Greece was,
indeed, a great occasion for some relaxation, and everyone
who participated left happy, full and maybe even a little
more knowledgeable about Greek tradition.

WELCOMING GUESTS—John Gegumis (far left), chef and owner of
2nd Avenue Café,
first thanked everyone for attending the Taste of Greece
event dinner at his
restaurant Monday, before telling a little about the night’s
menu. A three-course Greek
meal was served to those who attended the sold out event.
The Winchester
Downtown Group hopes to hold many more events like this one.
